Demistify Hypnosis

“Hypnotism has been used by physicians in minor operations as a sort of psychical chloroform for persons who might be endangered by an aesthetic. But a hypnotic state is harmful to those often subjected to it; a negative psychological effect ensues that in time deranges the brain cells. Hypnotism is trespass into the territory of another’s consciousness. Its temporary phenomena have nothing in common with the miracles performed by men of divine realization.”(Autobiography of a Yogi by Paramahansa Yogananda)

Raja Yoga by Swami Vivekananda mentions hypnosis in his commentaries, “think of the mind like a team of wild horses, and rather than controlling them through muscular strength and taking hold of the reins, you ask another to hit them on the head to stun them into a submissive state for a short period of time. Each time another stuns the horses into submission the person loses an amount of their own mental energy. From continued regular sessions of hypnosis from another person, entering into this docile state, instead of gaining power and better control, the mind can become a shapeless powerless mass eventually leading to the mental asylum.

In response to these two references to hypnosis… here is an explaination…

The hypnosis my gurus speak of here is the kind that makes people do things without their control. e.g. television and most media which makes people get roused into a state and take sides or make a purchase based on pure emotion which they later either justify through reason or express buyer’s remorse over. the military uses it to send the young recruits to go into battle. the terrorist groups use it to hang cyanide capsules on young children and teenagers to escape being interrogated after capture. this is what Master speaks of. even in evangelical churches where you see the preacher get its congregation into a state of mass hysteria that is stage hypnosis.

Without bypassing the critical mind one cannot sleep. When we drift and dream before entering into deep sleep, clinically it is called a hypnoidal state. That is natural hypnosis. The other alternative would be taking a hallucinating drug and bypassing the hynoidal state which eventually makes people drug dependent and is dangerous since it initially numbs and eventually kills the brain cells. When one laughs or cries watching a movie or game or reading a book that is environmental hypnosis. Consciously we know they are paid actors on a screen, shadows from the past, it isn’t even live theater yet people get attached and express an emotion. This can’t occur without accessing the subconscious mind. This is conditional hypnosis. All sports people are doing a job, getting paid to play and yet people react emotionally to a match, that is accessing the subconscious mind which is hypnosis.

When you miss a turn while walking or driving that is highway hypnosis. When you think of a loved one or a hurtful one and experience the emotion that is self-hypnosis. All goal fulfillment is achieved through self hypnosis.

There are so many forms of hypnosis. Through chanting when trance is induced that is also hypnosis. Meditation is also a trance induced state which creates similar brain waves as hypnosis. In hypnosis we access 88% of our mind which is just the subconscious mind, but in meditation we use 100% of our mind, the conscious and the sub-conscious. That is how we access the higher conscious state through meditation. During energy work we access this state. Light hypnosis accesses both aspects of the mind while deep hypnosis accesses only the sub-conscious mind which according to me is unethical. The client is then unaware of what transpired consciously which is truly dangerous and terrible karma.

When one does long distance healing using Reiki one cannot do it just with their conscious mind and their personal energy. One does have to bypass their critical mind and enter a meditative state where they align and integrate both conscious and subconscious mind. Only then they can access their higher consciousness to tap into the universal energy and flow it long distance. Hypnosis is the state their mind enters into to achieve this. Hypnosis is part of meditation, but meditation isn’t part of hypnosis.

Full Moon meditation & Huna workshop

Full Moon in August: Raksha Bandhan – The protective bond.

Every day has a significance in the oriental calendar. As per the astral alignments, everyone on earth exists, except humans who try to alter destiny. This leads to going out of destiny and giving rise to conflicts leading to a constant state of struggle.

It is not easy for anyone to know what is expected for perfect results. Whenever we focus on one area of our live, the other areas seem to falter. But there are a few simple things that can be done daily to keep the balance as best possible while evolving easily. Most growth seems to come in times of conflict. But is there another way?

Yes. It is by rising above the conflict we see the solution. Then we come down into the three dimension and enact it, live it. There are no shortcuts. Meditation is not a quick fix for anything. Meditation does not make a person holier or happier. Meditation isn’t sitting in one space and have a wandering mind. Hence we must meditate on an object, a form. With time(which could be millions of lifetimes), we bypass the form and reach the formless.

There are various forms of meditation. Whatever works for an individual that is what we need to do for ourselves. But changing your path often will always keep you in the beginner state.

Why group meditation? For collective energy for expressing gratitude and setting intent. When we are asking for anything we are affirming the lack of it. When we are expressing gratitude, we affirm abundance. Full moon is a time ot awaken the gentleness within us and may it shine through all darkness within us. We could choose to turn on the light or become the light. Until we can become the light, we must the candle/lamp every day and every night. No matter where we are in the world, we remain connected to the candle in our shrine, the lamp at our altar. A boat needs an anchor and a sail. We are like the boat. We need the altar and the plan, else we are all lost.

Writing out a plan makes it possible, brings down thoughts from the mental plane to the physical plane. Gives us a perspective on our desire. After we write it out, we realize that may be we do not need it, or it is not possible for now. Because there are other things unfinished or can’t be shoved aside.

After we pray/chant/meditate/connect with our higher selves, we surrender and release the effects of all our actions good/bad. We gain clarity. After the rain is gone, we can see clearer now. After the dust has died down, we can bring and come to peace and hence experience true power. Our ego leads to our deluded selves which creates the storm in our lives. There is no end to our desires and greed. They are all good as long as you can handle them, they are ecological (good for you, good for the planet) and you are keeping the balance in other areas of your life.

People turns towards spirituality to find peace. Maybe you experienced oneness with your higher self when on drugs and now you want to find it without the drugs. Maybe you made tons of money and have lots of fame and yet there is no peace and now you are here. Maybe the love of your life was all you cared about and now you are not as charmed by your love and are seeking peace. Our reasons for turning towards spirituality are all justified and equally real. But now that we are on a spiritual path and taste freedom without the drugs, the lust, the ego and drop into the freedom even if it is for a split second, we know we want more of it. Most of us feel this is it and I shall continue with my other quest and be spiritual enough to get the rest of what I was pursuing. A few say “to hell with everything else”; when I get IT, I shall have it all.

Past Life Regression

A fascinating and revealing journey to take for the brave of heart. Often people ask me if I believe in past lives. My response “my belief has nothing to do with it”. After conversing enough with each of my inquirers there is one common conclusion: ‘they are all fascinated by it but have no proof and are seeking to either prove it or disprove it”.

In the western world where the tendency is to have a mutual relation between the flock and the shepherd, there is very small scope of questioning. Where I come from, everything and everyone is questioned. The soul is considered to be eternal. Until our soul meets with the creator through nirvana ( a state attained by many enlightened masters), it will continue on this journey. Each life is a result of unfulfilled desires. As long as our desires and attachments continue we keep on being reborn to fulfill our wishes.

During a past life regression, the one taking the journey will find himself or herself in one or more previous lives. The stories that they see unfold is like a movie. Each movie is pertaining to what is being experienced in their current life at the time the past-life regression is undertaken.

Anyone who is not fully trained and has merely read a few pages of induction should not take anyone on this journey. Please find out about your therapist before you embark on a past life regression with him or her. You never know what your past lives have been. If you drop into that life and start reliving that life, an untrained hypnotist will not know what to do to deal with your previous life and bring you back safely. A hypnotist may know the induction for weight loss and/or smoking cessation but not past life regression.

This is a esoteric journey you embark upon and the hypnotherapist must be both ethical and ecological.

The hypnotist by no means is a guru or teacher who participates in your previous lives either through visions or experiences. He or she merely is a facilitator who is trained and certified to facilitate a  past life regression that you take on your own.

Someone who has been meditating for a long time or using self-hypnosis can through their intent come upon past lives and answers through these sacred journey. But until you have learned to take these journeys on your own, allow someone who is trained and able to help you. Allow this journey to surprise you. Aloha!

Mindfulness

An ancient way of living practiced in the modern days. Mindfulness is a psychological term, a philosophy, also called insight meditation and even Vipassana, the Pali word. Pali is the language spoken during the times of Buddha in India. The ancient Buddhist scriptures are written in Pali. Today Sri Lanka is the custodian of these volumes. The Theravada tradition use Pali in their prayers and rituals.

I personally have always believed in being mindful rather than being mindless. Each time I wasn’t mindful or conscious of my step, I did stumble. Even now it happens and I am sure you may concur. When we work on being mindful our life does slow down. I have been accused of being slow all my life. I have always been living in the moment and insightful. I must have done this in many previous lives hence I was born with this nature. I am sure you may resonate to this through your own experience or someone you know of.

This weekend we are attending a mindfulness retreat at our Buddhist temple, the An-Lac Mission. It is being offered by Rev. Yogavacharya Rahula. So what is mindfulness? and what did I learn from this great teacher?

Living in the moment: Our body is always in the present moment. It cannot exist in the past or future. The heart can beat in the present moment, the lungs breathe in the present moment, the nervous system sends signals in the present moment. It cannot happen in the past or the future. So when we watch our breath and connect it with the bodily sensations and the physical vibrations as experienced by the body, our mind will slow down and our awareness expands.

Every action a meditation: Whether we are sitting or standing, getting up or taking a seat, walking or waiting, eating or drinking, we can watch our body as we engage it in the act and be watching our breath. The physical vibrations, the bodily sensations : when we are conscious of them, it slows down our wandering mind and we become mindful.

e.g. tea drinking meditation: we lift our cup to our lips – watch it, the tea flows into our mouth – watch it, our mouth is filled with the flavor, the warmth, watch it, put the cup down and rest your hands in your lap, watch it, swallow the tea, watch it, watch your breath rise your chest, your belly, your exhalation contracts your belly, watch it, lift your hand to your cup watch it… and allow this to continue until your tea is over. This is meditation while enjoying your tea. Something that can help you achieve this, is keeping your gaze lowered and not distracted.

M&M’s Meditation in a minute: Every hour for a minute you can meditate. It does not matter where you are. You do not have to close your eyes. But just watching your breath flow in and out of your body while you are sitting or standing or walking or bending or engaged in any other action you can meditate. Just for a minute. It is a fantastic feeling.

Meditation on a dime: In the loudest of places you can meditate. Allow your mind to go below the noise and distractions and watch your breath and your bodily sensations – this is the best way to deepen your practice and slow down your mind while being aware of all that is going on within you. Of course you must be an advanced practitioner to achieve results, but we have to begin sometime, so why not now, just for a minute. You will love yourself little bit more after your minute of silence in the chaos, I promise you.
