Demistify Hypnosis

“Hypnotism has been used by physicians in minor operations as a sort of psychical chloroform for persons who might be endangered by an aesthetic. But a hypnotic state is harmful to those often subjected to it; a negative psychological effect ensues that in time deranges the brain cells. Hypnotism is trespass into the territory of another’s consciousness. Its temporary phenomena have nothing in common with the miracles performed by men of divine realization.”(Autobiography of a Yogi by Paramahansa Yogananda)

Raja Yoga by Swami Vivekananda mentions hypnosis in his commentaries, “think of the mind like a team of wild horses, and rather than controlling them through muscular strength and taking hold of the reins, you ask another to hit them on the head to stun them into a submissive state for a short period of time. Each time another stuns the horses into submission the person loses an amount of their own mental energy. From continued regular sessions of hypnosis from another person, entering into this docile state, instead of gaining power and better control, the mind can become a shapeless powerless mass eventually leading to the mental asylum.

In response to these two references to hypnosis… here is an explaination…

The hypnosis my gurus speak of here is the kind that makes people do things without their control. e.g. television and most media which makes people get roused into a state and take sides or make a purchase based on pure emotion which they later either justify through reason or express buyer’s remorse over. the military uses it to send the young recruits to go into battle. the terrorist groups use it to hang cyanide capsules on young children and teenagers to escape being interrogated after capture. this is what Master speaks of. even in evangelical churches where you see the preacher get its congregation into a state of mass hysteria that is stage hypnosis.

Without bypassing the critical mind one cannot sleep. When we drift and dream before entering into deep sleep, clinically it is called a hypnoidal state. That is natural hypnosis. The other alternative would be taking a hallucinating drug and bypassing the hynoidal state which eventually makes people drug dependent and is dangerous since it initially numbs and eventually kills the brain cells. When one laughs or cries watching a movie or game or reading a book that is environmental hypnosis. Consciously we know they are paid actors on a screen, shadows from the past, it isn’t even live theater yet people get attached and express an emotion. This can’t occur without accessing the subconscious mind. This is conditional hypnosis. All sports people are doing a job, getting paid to play and yet people react emotionally to a match, that is accessing the subconscious mind which is hypnosis.

When you miss a turn while walking or driving that is highway hypnosis. When you think of a loved one or a hurtful one and experience the emotion that is self-hypnosis. All goal fulfillment is achieved through self hypnosis.

There are so many forms of hypnosis. Through chanting when trance is induced that is also hypnosis. Meditation is also a trance induced state which creates similar brain waves as hypnosis. In hypnosis we access 88% of our mind which is just the subconscious mind, but in meditation we use 100% of our mind, the conscious and the sub-conscious. That is how we access the higher conscious state through meditation. During energy work we access this state. Light hypnosis accesses both aspects of the mind while deep hypnosis accesses only the sub-conscious mind which according to me is unethical. The client is then unaware of what transpired consciously which is truly dangerous and terrible karma.

When one does long distance healing using Reiki one cannot do it just with their conscious mind and their personal energy. One does have to bypass their critical mind and enter a meditative state where they align and integrate both conscious and subconscious mind. Only then they can access their higher consciousness to tap into the universal energy and flow it long distance. Hypnosis is the state their mind enters into to achieve this. Hypnosis is part of meditation, but meditation isn’t part of hypnosis.

I am glad you have begun researching this area. this note may be the begining of your journey and I applaud you.

I am also am open to questions, comments, concerns and corrections. I myself have just begun the journey. You are also welcome to share this note with who you believe might find it useful. Please retain the original format.

Past Life Regression

A fascinating and revealing journey to take for the brave of heart. Often people ask me if I believe in past lives. My response “my belief has nothing to do with it”. After conversing enough with each of my inquirers there is one common conclusion: ‘they are all fascinated by it but have no proof and are seeking to either prove it or disprove it”.

In the western world where the tendency is to have a mutual relation between the flock and the shepherd, there is very small scope of questioning. Where I come from, everything and everyone is questioned. The soul is considered to be eternal. Until our soul meets with the creator through nirvana ( a state attained by many enlightened masters), it will continue on this journey. Each life is a result of unfulfilled desires. As long as our desires and attachments continue we keep on being reborn to fulfill our wishes.

During a past life regression, the one taking the journey will find himself or herself in one or more previous lives. The stories that they see unfold is like a movie. Each movie is pertaining to what is being experienced in their current life at the time the past-life regression is undertaken.

Anyone who is not fully trained and has merely read a few pages of induction should not take anyone on this journey. Please find out about your therapist before you embark on a past life regression with him or her. You never know what your past lives have been. If you drop into that life and start reliving that life, an untrained hypnotist will not know what to do to deal with your previous life and bring you back safely. A hypnotist may know the induction for weight loss and/or smoking cessation but not past life regression.

This is a esoteric journey you embark upon and the hypnotherapist must be both ethical and ecological.

The hypnotist by no means is a guru or teacher who participates in your previous lives either through visions or experiences. He or she merely is a facilitator who is trained and certified to facilitate a  past life regression that you take on your own.

Someone who has been meditating for a long time or using self-hypnosis can through their intent come upon past lives and answers through these sacred journey. But until you have learned to take these journeys on your own, allow someone who is trained and able to help you. Allow this journey to surprise you. Aloha!

A few things about hypnosis

Hypnosis is a trance induced state. In this state you bypass the critical mind to gain access to the sub-conscious. Once this is achieved the trained hypnotherapist uses suggestions to make conscious wishes a subconscious desire.

e.g. every smoker wishes they were a non-smoker. This is a conscious wish, but because of habits which is a subconscious programming, it is difficult, nearly impossible. By the use of hypnotic suggestions the habits to reach out for a cigarette can be changed to a positive habit like sipping water instead and the habit is easily overcome. The conscious wish to quit smoking becomes a subconscious desire.

Usually habit control is a symptomatic relief. When the habit was filling up an emotional void, with the habit controlled, the unresolved emotion will trigger another habit which may not be healthy. Hence working with the habit and the root cause of it is necessary to remove the habit forever.

Hypnosis can help with both symptomatic and causal relief.

Hypnosis allows healing to begin.

Self-hypnosis allows for self-healing.

Hypnosis can be integrated with any holistic profession.e.g. massage, nursing, dentistry, chiropractor, physiotherapy, cranio-sacral therapy

Hypnosis is not meditation.

Hypnosis allows for:

  1. weight management
  2. pain control
  3. sleeping well
  4. stress reduction
  5. habit control (smoking cessation, nail biting, hair pulling, foot tapping, leg shaking etc.)
  6. overcome writer’s block
  7. work through fear and phobia
  8. past life regression
  9. working with pre and post cancer therapy
  10. life’s passages (empty nest, death of a pet or a relative, separation from a loved one, loss of a job)
  11. visualization and goal getting
  12. overcoming anger, sorrow, hurt, shame, guilt, doubts even jealousy

and so much more…

Hypnosis is safe, effective, non-invasive and non-addictive.

Hypnosis is tapping your power within, your subconscious mind, 88% of who you are to create your results, your way.

Anyone can become a hypnotist from a weekend seminar. But to be a hypnotherapist, the practitioner must have studied and learned from an accredited institute for at least a year. A true hypnotherapist must always be learning and growing to bring better results to their clients.

Learning never ends for a practitioner who is always seeking to make it better for their clients.

De-mystify Hypnotherapy

Hypnotherapy is not:
1. Power control: One cannot use hypnotherapy to control someone else’s mind. There is no way a client gives away all their secrets when under hypnosis. The one who is in control during hypnosis is the client. It is very easy to get into a state of hypnosis as it is to get out of it. You are always in control.

2. Using psychic power: Once someone asked me if using hypnosis they could find out things from another time. She had lost her journal and wanted to know where she had left it. There is no way hypnosis can help you with that. To solve mysteries or unsolvable cases, we need psychics to tap into this power, not a hypnotherapist.

3. Mind reading: The first reaction of most of my friends when I enrolled in the school of hypnotherapy was “now I need to be careful or you may find out all my secrets.” A hypnotherapist can never read anyone else’s thoughts using hypnosis. If there are any correct guesses it is just like a mother can tell when a child is lying, which is more intuition and not hypnosis.

4. Learning someone else’s secret: Like I mentioned before, using hypnosis does not allow anyone to sit in a room and find out what some one else is thinking through the practice of hypnosis. If you want to know a secret, go ask their best friend and good luck with it.

5. Predicting the future: We cannot tell what is going to happen to us or others using hypnosis. For that we need clairvoyants and psychic readers who can tap into the future for divinations and predictions. No syllabus of hypnotherapy includes “predicting the future”.

6. Stage acting: There are many shows on cruises and in Vegas and elsewhere where someone saw people getting on stage and under the direction of a hypnotist acted out to entertain the audience. It is true and this is called stage hypnosis. This is not what any hypnotherapist would do to their clients. This is merely what it is called: “stage hypnosis”.

7. Isn’t just about weight loss and smoking cessation: Whenever I tell anyone that I am clinical hypnotherapist, right away they ask me “do you help people lose weight?” or “can you help people stop smoking?”. Hypnosis does help people lose weight and stop smoking.

Weight gain and smoking has to do with unresolved emotions which impact lifestyles and eventually health. When we help with symptoms and not causes, the problem easily recurs.

Hypnotherapy does more than help you lose weight and stop smoking. It hands you back the key to your life. You become the front seat driver.

8. Something that is done to someone else: All hypnosis is self-hypnosis. The hypnotherapist is the facilitator who helps the client achieve the state of homeostasis so as to work through their prior conditioning and create new habits.

9. Is not mere hypnosis: Anyone can read a book or go to a weekend seminar and learn how to hypnotize, but what after that? Only a hypnotherapist can help you overcome your emotional blocks, change your habits and achieve your goals using hypnosis.

Fear & Loss

Whatever you fear losing, let go of it.” – Yoda

Before Yoda, the ancient seers said it. It is mentioned in many sutras. When you let go, all you are letting go of is your fear of loss.

I know for most people, it is easier said than done. But having worked through my fears for years, in fact an entire lifetime, I realize all I have to do is allow fear to exist as is. All I need to do is step aside from the shadow of fear. My friend Thomas had this revelation, during Christmas on the Isla de Gomera, in Spain.

You may say, this is easy for you, not me. You may say this might be true for those who have studied and practiced it, not me. I say to this, it is easy for anyone who chooses to shed fear.

Whenever you feel fear of loss, take yourself to a place when you did not have what you do fear losing. See yourself in that moment in space when you did not have it. Hear what you hear and the feel everything that exists around you physically and emotionally. Own your thoughts from the time when you did not have what you fear losing now. How was it back then? Take a deep breath and know that you will be fine even after it is gone.

So, now that you know you were fine before you had it, know you that you will be fine even after you lose it. Once you own this feeling, ask yourself “where is the fear?” You will find it is hard to find.

When you disown your fear, you gift yourself with faith, with freedom.

Here’s to a fearless you. Go live and Be!

Habit control

Human beings are creatures of habit. Just like we can create a habit, we are also capable of getting out of a habit or replacing an old one with a new habit.

It actually takes 21 days to create a new habit and three days to break a habit. Now that is good news, isn’t it?

Last year my mother passed away. This year my family gathered to bring the year to a close. I realized that though everyone was expressing their loss in their own way, it seemed to me that most people had moved on. My brother-in-law mentioned that in six months everyone is literally done mourning a death. Though it shocked me, but as a behaviorist I realized it to be true. We hold on to what we want to hold on to. WE can replace any person easily, a feeling/emotion and a habit.

e.g. if you have been actively exercising and then you have a break in your routine and do not exercise for a day, it gets harder to return to it the second day and worse on the third day, right? After that it is like starting brand new, you have to force yourself to tie your shoe laces and step out of the house. It took you three days to break the habit of years of exercising. The same applies to meditating, yoga, diet, journaling, coffee, smoking, or even hanging out with your best friend.

You may ask why an iceberg? The tip of the iceberg is really not the tippy top. It is what we see above the water. That is the tip which is approximately 12% of the entire iceberg. What lies beneath the surface is the iceberg, the 88% of it. Our mind is just like that. 12% of our mind is the conscious mind, 88% of it is our sub-conscious.

Within our conscious mind we have our logic, reasoning, decision making, analytical abilities and our will power, which usually we do not seem to find when we need it the most. Our memories, opinions, likes, dislikes, our comfort zone is really in our sub-conscious mind. This is why when I ask you about your telephone number you can say it right away. But before this moment you weren’t thinking of your telephone number, were you?

This is because your memory of your telephone number is in your sub-conscious mind. As we go through this conversation your telephone number is now in your conscious mind. All our memories are stored and our habits are continuously reinforced in our sub-conscious mind.

Hynosis and meditation are both trance induced states through which we access our sub-conscious mind. True meditation is self-hypnosis, which comes with time and practice. Our sub-conscious  mind has all the answers we seek and the keys to our success. When accessed we can find answers within and also break free from habits that hold us back.

In hypnosis, you are the magician. A hypnotherapist is just someone who helps you help yourself. Getting rid of habits that keep you back takes 3 days, creating new habits take 21days, or 3 weeks.

In your journey of habit control, here’s wishing you sweet success.
